Jack (not his real name) told us his story in 2011 and as part of our 50th year we're sharing his story here...
He was married for thirty years but his habitual drinking led to separation. He explained, “I found myself homeless and street drinking. I had nowhere to go and was placed in a hostel for drinkers. Life wasn’t kind to me and I felt that things couldn’t get any worse.”
He eventually secured a flat and thought things were looking brighter, but his problems continued. “I was drinking large amounts of alcohol and subjected daily to what I believe was bullying by neighbours and other drinkers. They would just walk in my flat and help themselves to my food and possessions. They stole from me and left me with nothing. I felt that I was dying and that nobody would even miss me.”
Couldn’t believe my luck
“It was at this time I was referred to The Whitechapel Centre for help and support. They came out and assessed me and helped me to set small goals. They referred me to a clinic to detox and on the day of discharge they took me to view a new flat in a secure scheme and I couldn’t believe my luck when the housing officer said it was mine if I wanted it.
“I moved away from all the bullies and thieves and settled in with Whitechapel’s help. They helped me get financial support through a grant and have taken all the worries I had away from me.
“I don’t feel frightened anymore and can be totally honest with them. Even when I have the odd little wobbles (drinking). I now have more confidence in myself and can face the world and its problems better.
“I have also reconciled with my wife so life is getting better. I realise that I still have a long way to go but I am confident that The Whitechapel Centre will continue to support me along the way. I can’t thank them enough.”
