Paul is 68 now and enjoying life in a lovely bungalow with a garden. But way back in 1978, when he was 21, he was diagnosed as schizophrenic and his life looked bleak.
He says, “You helped me out years ago. I was living in a one bedroom attic flat in Seaforth, before DLA or PIP. I was basically sick and on the dole, getting about £6 a week. If it hadn't been for your help, I could have well been homeless.”
He discovered The Whitechapel Centre in the early 80s and attended for about a year. “Although I was never homeless, I used to get a meal for 10p, and did my laundry, free of charge, at your day centre. As far as I can remember tea was free and attending your centre meant I saved on heating bills as well.” It was the help he needed at the right time.
He adds, “So thanks for your help all those years ago, God only knows where I would have been without you. And I hope and pray that you can continue, helping the homeless of Liverpool. Until God willing, one day, it will be a thing of the past.”
