Volunteer Sue Bence, explains why she loves working with us:
“I heard about the Whitechapel Centre when I was supporting children and families in my role as a social worker in Liverpool so when I retired I decided to volunteer. I knew it would be worthwhile and that I would be welcomed and valued. I was right.
I started at Langsdale Street six years ago when it was a day centre and now I volunteer at the Blackstock donations centre but have done lots of things in between. What stands out for me is the collaborative work that goes on across The Whitechapel Centre and through their links with other agencies and services.
The clients who access our services, and the staff who work so hard to support them, connect with me. I’ve had personal experience of some of the issues our clients face; and the staff are so supportive, both of their clients and of the volunteers.
I’m often asked if I volunteer to ‘fill my time’ since retiring. Absolutely not! I love volunteering, I’ve met some exceptional people, both professionals and volunteers, who have had a positive impact on me and I’ve made some very good friends.
Volunteering is very worthwhile. I feel that I’m helping to make a difference. I like to think I can raise awareness of the issues faced by our clients and I always challenge those who express negative views about our homeless community.
And I like the variety of different people you meet. Who wouldn’t want to volunteer?”
