We've had a very busy time at the Whitechapel Centre since the first lockdown, bringing people who were sleeping rough or staying in the night shelter, indoors to an aparthotel.
Since then we have seen some amazing transformations. People had the time and opportunity to address addictions and health issues and many are now ready to take on their own tenancy. We have been working closely with housing associations, homeless services and Liverpool City Council to find suitable, long-term accommodation. Through this partnership 300 homeless individuals and families have viewed, accepted and moved into permanent accommodation and a further 140 people have been matched to a property and are waiting to view and move in to their new homes.
Although the way we are supporting people has changed and we are no longer able to provide communal meals, we are still making sure clients have all they need. Our volunteer team have received and sorted donations throughout and have provided over 4,000 food parcels, 6,000 freshly prepared meals, 900 toiletry packs and 700 clothing packs so that clients could stay indoors and safe.
As we head into the winter we are looking at safe ways to re-open the centre on Langsdale Street to provide a central assessment point for people who are newly homeless. Alongside this, we will remain at the aparthotel, to offer a temporary safe space for people to stay, off the streets and socially distanced. Our outreach team remain out on the streets every day, responding to calls to the Always Room Inside phone line, encouraging people to come indoors.
We are unsure exactly what Christmas will bring for us and our clients but we will make sure everyone receives a Christmas Gift and either a cooked Christmas Dinner or a hamper with all the elements to cook for themselves.
We can only do this because of the kind donations we receive. We’re running a Christmas appeal which gives people a few different ways to support us – volunteer, donate useful things or support financially.
Your support will help us continue our work this Christmas and give people the opportunity to change their lives throughout the year.
Please give generously. Thank you.
