Leave a gift in your Will - frequently asked questions
We are part of Legacy Liverpool, a group of local charities encouraging people to leave a gift in their Will.
Why should I make a Will?
Surprisingly one in three people in the UK die without writing a Will. This can leave behind costly and upsetting disputes and may even see the Government disposing of your estate. You may not consider yourself to be wealthy but you may be surprised at how much your estate is worth when you include your house, pension and belongings. Including a charitable gift may also help to minimise your estate’s Inheritance Tax liabilities.
How do I leave a gift in my Will to The Whitechapel Centre?
If you have not yet written a Will we recommend using a solicitor or professional will-writer to make sure your Will is legal and valid. Homemade or DIY Wills can often be problematic or invalid as it is easy to make technical mistakes. This can lead to upsetting and costly disputes. The cost of using a solicitor or will-writer depends on how complicated your Will is. These professional bodies will direct you to solicitors or will-writers near you:
If you have already written your Will you can amend it to include a gift to us with a Codicil form. This is a short document you can add on to your Will.
What type of gift can I leave?
There are a few different ways to leave a gift:
* A Pecuniary legacy is a gift of a specific sum of money e.g. £1,000
* A Residuary legacy is a share of your estate after you have provided for your family or friends.
* You can also leave specific items to charity e.g. a car, jewellery, books etc
How will my gift help?
No matter how big or small, your gift will have a lasting impact on our work with people who are homeless.
