VOLUNTEER WITH US
"My name is Hilary. I’ve been volunteering at the Whitechapel, usually just a day a week, for about a year. I started a couple of years after i retired from teaching in further education. I wanted to do something completely different from anything I’d done before, I was up for a challenge as I knew nothing about homelessness and to be honest was a bit frightened of the stereotype I had in my mind of homeless people. I needn’t have worried. Everyone is brilliant, the staff are really friendly and supportive and there’s always a bit of good banter going on. You meet all sorts of people of different ages, some people are pretty wrapped up in their own problems which is very understandable, generally people are friendly and appreciative of the support they’re getting and often good fun too.
It’s great, no day is the same and I wouldn’t be without my Whitechapel days!" |
Are you looking for a way to help people in need in your community? Do you have skills that you can share with us?
Our services rely on people who selflessly give up their time to help others. We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities, some working directly with service users, others working behind the scenes. Whatever skills you have to offer, talk to us! We value our volunteers as much for their life experiences as for their qualifications. As a volunteer you will be offered a comprehensive induction program and full on-the-job training. Research shows that volunteering really does have a positive impact on health. It raises self-esteem and confidence, helps people gain new skills and to make new friends. Please see below for details of the volunteer roles we are currently recruiting for. Each role description details the times and days we currently need volunteers active in these roles, as well as further details of what the role entails. If this role interests you, and you have availability for the shifts required, please feel free to complete our online application form. Following on from your application, we will invite you in for an informal volunteer interview to discuss volunteering with us in more detail. Generally we will contact you within a week of having applied to volunteer to arrange an interview. Successful interviewees will be invited to attend the next upcoming New Volunteer Training session, which is held monthly. Please note that we are not currently recruiting for volunteers in any other roles than these advertised here, and specifically for the times/days advertised. All volunteers must be aged 18 or over. Please note that some posts are subject to an Enhanced level check by the Disclosure & Barring Service. We are an open, inclusive organisation and we work with the most excluded people in our community. We challenge discrimination in all forms in order to achieve fair access and inclusion for all. Equality and fairness underpin everything we do, and we look to recruit volunteers whose personal values match our own. |
